Massey Ferguson 4.X.13 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit
Issue description
The transmission control unit has detected a break in the electrical circuit for the reverse clutch solenoid. An "open circuit" typically means that electrical current cannot flow through the circuit, which is usually caused by a broken wire, a disconnected or corroded connector, or a failed (burnt out) solenoid coil. When this code is active, the tractor will likely refuse to shift into reverse or may disable transmission movement entirely as a safety precaution.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 controller to the transmission valve block for rub points, pinched wires, or damage.
Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid connector and check for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion.
Perform a coil resistance test using a multimeter across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid (infinite resistance/O.L indicates a broken internal coil; normal spec indicates a wiring issue).
Turn the key to the ON position and verify that the solenoid connector is receiving the proper reference voltage and has a solid ground connection back to the chassis/module.
Repair steps
Preparation
Clean the area around the transmission valve block (usually located on the side of the transmission housing) to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical harness from the reverse clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or snap-ring holding the solenoid cartridge in the valve block.
Extraction
Carefully pull the solenoid straight out. Have a drain pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining bolts (torque to OEM specifications).
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Calibration
After replacing a transmission clutch solenoid, you must clear the fault codes and perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure using the tractor's dashboard diagnostic menu or a dealer service tool so the TRANS1 module can learn the new solenoid's engagement characteristics.
