Massey Ferguson 4.X.61 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 1 Solenoid Valve
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit for the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52 or X14), such as an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V, or a short circuit to 0V (ground). The operator will typically experience a control error or failure when attempting to switch the transmission from road mode (Hare) down to field mode (Turtle).

Check the cause
Visually inspect the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52) on the transmission valve block and its electrical connector for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.
Perform a harness continuity test between the L52 solenoid and the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller using a multimeter.
Test the harness wires for a short circuit to ground (0V) or a short circuit to power (+12V).
Measure the resistance across the pins of the L52 solenoid coil (an infinite reading indicates an internal open circuit; near zero indicates an internal short).
Verify the operation of the Range 1 switch in the cab to rule out an inconsistency between the switch command and the solenoid state.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the transmission control valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the Range 1 (L52) solenoid valve.
Removal
Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the L52 solenoid valve in place. Carefully pull the solenoid valve straight out of the valve block.
O-Ring Lubrication
Discard the old O-rings. Coat the O-rings on the new AGCO electrovalve with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid to prevent tearing during installation.
Installation
Insert the new solenoid valve into the block. Reinstall the flange and tighten the retaining screws to the OEM specified torque.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
Clear Codes & Test
Turn the key to the ON position and use the tractor's diagnostic interface to clear the 4.X.61 fault code. Start the tractor and test drive it, shifting between ranges (specifically Hare to Turtle) to ensure smooth engagement and verify the repair.
