Massey Ferguson 4.X.62 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 2 Solenoid Valve

The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit for the Range 2 solenoid valve (open circuit, short to +12V, or short to 0V). It can also be triggered by an inconsistency between the Range 2 solenoid valve and the Range 2 position switch.

   Perform a manual override test by pressing the push-button at the end of the solenoid valve to determine if the fault is hydraulic or electrical.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller and the Range 2 solenoid valve for chafed wires causing a short to ground or power.

   Perform a coil resistance test by disconnecting the solenoid and measuring resistance across the coil pins (infinite indicates an open circuit, near zero indicates an internal short).

   Check the Range 2 position switch (L57/X489) for proper operation, as a failed switch will cause an inconsistency fault.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the transmission range solenoid block, typically mounted on the right-hand side of the gearbox housing. The Range 2 solenoid is designated as L53 (or X485 depending on the exact transmission variant).

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the Range 2 solenoid valve.

   Removal

   Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place. Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve block. Have a catch pan ready for a small amount of hydraulic oil.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new valve into the block, ensuring it seats fully.

   Reassembly

   Reinstall the retaining flange and tighten the screws to the specified torque (refer to your specific model's torque specs, generally snug for hydraulic flanges). Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Calibration/Clearing

   Turn the ignition on and use the diagnostic interface or dashboard sequence to clear the stored 4.X.62 / 04.02.62 fault code. Test drive the tractor to ensure smooth shifting into Range 2.
