Massey Ferguson 4.X.69 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 3 Solenoid Valve
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected an open circuit or a short circuit (+12 V or 0 V) on the circuit for the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54). The system's safety reaction is to disengage all ranges for 6 seconds (coasting) and then attempt to re-engage the range that was active before the error, accompanied by a warning buzzer.

Check the cause
Verify that the electrical connectors for the four range solenoid valves (L52, L53, L54, L55) and the four range position sensors are plugged into their correct respective locations on the right-hand side of the gearbox.
Inspect the harness connections and wiring between the TRANS1 controller and the L54 solenoid for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.
Check transmission control fuses F4 and F29.
Disconnect the L54 solenoid valve and measure its coil resistance across the pins. A healthy OEM coil should read approximately 9.7 to 10 Ohms at ambient temperature. Infinite (open) or near-zero (shorted) resistance indicates an internal fault.
Repair steps
Locate the Valve
Locate the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54) on the right-hand side of the transmission gearbox control block. It is grouped with the L52, L53, and L55 valves.
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground to prevent short circuits.
Remove the Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical harness plug from the L54 solenoid. Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve to the transmission housing.
Install the New Valve
Clean the mounting surface on the gearbox. Install the new solenoid valve (ensure the O-rings/seals are lubricated with clean transmission fluid).
Reassemble
Secure the retaining flange and screws, then reconnect the electrical harness.
System Reset
Reconnect the battery. To reset the Autotronic 5 system, turn the key on, move the PowerControl lever to the neutral position, and then press and release the clutch pedal. Clear any stored inactive codes using the Wintest diagnostic software if available.
