Massey Ferguson 4.X.90 – TRANS1 (Transmission Controller): Issue With Speed Sensor Values
Issue description
No intermediate speed detected and current forward speed greater than 0. The transmission controller detects that the tractor is moving but is receiving a zero or dead signal from the intermediate speed sensor.

Check the cause
Use the Massey Ferguson Wintest software (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic screen) to monitor the active intermediate speed sensor value in RPMs while moving.
Check the sensor connector and the chassis control module harness for backed-out pins, corrosion, or damage. Verify there is no open circuit or short circuit to ground/+12V.
Disconnect the X483 sensor and measure the resistance across the pins. A healthy inductive sensor typically reads 450 Ohms (+/- 20 Ohms) when the tractor is stopped.
Check if the sensor has vibrated loose in the transmission housing, which would increase the air gap and cause a loss of signal.
Repair steps
Position the tractor on flat ground and engage the parking brake.
Position the tractor on flat ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
Disconnect the intermediate speed sensor (X483).
Locate the intermediate speed sensor (X483) on the transmission housing and disconnect its electrical connector.
Unscrew the faulty sensor.
Loosen the counter-nut and unscrew the faulty sensor from the housing.
Apply thread sealant to the new sensor.
Apply a small amount of thread sealant (such as Loctite 5922) to the threads of the new sensor.
Screw the new sensor in fully.
Screw the new sensor in fully until it gently bottoms out against the internal gear.
Establish the correct air gap.
Unscrew the sensor by exactly ¾ of a turn to establish the correct air gap.
Tighten the counter-nut.
Tighten the counter-nut to approximately 6 Nm to secure the sensor in place.
Reconnect and test drive.
Reconnect the electrical connector, clear the fault codes, and test drive the tractor to verify the intermediate speed is now registering.
