4.X.96

Massey Ferguson 4.X.96 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 2 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 2

Issue description

The transmission control system has detected a malfunction, electrical fault, or an inconsistency between the commanded state of the Range 2 shift solenoid and the physical feedback signal coming from the Range 2 engaged switch. When this happens, the tractor may refuse to shift between ranges or may fail to move altogether.

Check the cause

  1. Test the Range 2 solenoid coil for continuity and correct resistance using a multimeter (a failed coil or open circuit is the most common culprit)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the transmission side block for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins

  3. Test the Range 2 Engaged Switch to ensure it is sending the correct closed/open signal when the range is mechanically engaged

  4. Verify that the transmission hydraulic system is delivering adequate pressure to the clutch packs (low pressure prevents mechanical shift completion)

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Components

Identify the bank of range change solenoids and switches mounted externally on the side of the Dyna transmission housing.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the transmission block around the solenoids to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during removal.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical connectors from Range Solenoid 2 and the Range 2 Engaged Switch.

  4. Remove the Faulty Part

Unbolt and carefully extract the faulty solenoid valve or switch from the transmission block.

  5. Install the Replacement

Fit the new solenoid or switch. Ensure that all O-rings are properly seated and lubricated with clean transmission hydraulic fluid to prevent pinching.

  6. Reassembly and Testing

Reconnect the wiring harness. Clear the 04.02.96 fault code from the TRANS1 module using a diagnostic tool, then test-drive the tractor to confirm smooth shifting into Range 2.

Parts you might need
