Massey Ferguson E4201.02 – Engine ECU: Crankshaft Speed Sensor Signal Issue

Issue description

The crank speed signal is erratic and the controller is detecting too many noise pulses. The engine's evaluation module expects a highly specific sequence of pulses from the crankshaft speed sensor, generated by a trigger wheel with 58 teeth and a 2-tooth gap. If the sensor reads too many pulses between the gaps (due to electrical noise, a failing sensor, or debris), this code is triggered, which can lead to hard starting, misfires, or engine stalling.

Check the cause

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool and monitor the Engine RPM while cranking the engine. If the RPM reads '0' or fluctuates wildly, the sensor signal is failing.

  2. Remove the sensor and inspect the magnetic tip for metal shavings or debris from the engine that can cause erratic 'noise' pulses.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and the sensor's connector for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  4. Shine a flashlight into the sensor mounting hole and inspect the trigger wheel to ensure none of the 58 teeth are chipped or damaged.

  5. Test the sensor's resistance with a multimeter and verify continuity in the wiring harness back to the Engine ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Turn off the ignition, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    The crankshaft position sensor is typically located on the front housing of the engine block (often below the fuel transfer pump) or near the crankshaft pulley/flywheel, depending on your specific AGCO Power engine layout.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the wiring harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Remove the retaining bolt (usually requiring a 10mm socket) that fastens the sensor to the housing. Carefully pull the sensor straight out.

  5. Prep the New Sensor

    Ensure the mounting surface on the engine block is clean. Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with a small amount of clean engine oil to prevent tearing during installation.

  6. Install

    Push the new sensor into the housing, insert the retaining bolt, and tighten it securely.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the wiring harness connector back into the sensor.

  8. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool to clear the E4201.02 fault code, and start the engine to verify smooth operation.
