Issue description

This code indicates that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system failed to build, maintain, or properly drop pressure during its automated self-test or purge cycle. The system relies on the DEF pump to pressurize the fluid for the dosing valve/injector. If the pump cannot reach the calibrated pressure range, or if there is a leak or blockage, the system will log this fault and may induce an engine derate (power reduction) to maintain emissions compliance.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the DEF tank has adequate fluid and that the fluid is uncontaminated (must be 32.5% urea concentration). Contamination is the leading cause of SCR system failures.

  2. Inspect all DEF supply and return lines for kinks, bends, or external leaks. Check the filler cap for proper sealing.

  3. Inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors at the DEF pump, DEF pressure sensor, and DEF level sensor for corrosion, breaks, or loose terminals.

  4. Look for white, crusty DEF crystal buildup around the injector, dosing valve, and pump, which can restrict flow.

  5. Use a diagnostic scan tool to command a system pressurization test (or use a physical pressure gauge) to see if the pump can generate the manufacturer-specified pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Clean and Isolate

    Clean the suspected area around the DEF pump and lines using a suitable solvent.

  2. Filter Saturation Trick

    If the system is unable to build pressure and the tractor has been sitting or the pump was recently serviced, the DEF pump filter may have dried out. Allow the DEF pump to sit in DEF fluid overnight to re-saturate the filter, then attempt the leak/pressure test again the next morning.

  3. Replace the DEF Filter

    If the filter is clogged with debris or crystallized DEF, drain the DEF tank, flush the system, and replace the main DEF filter cartridge.

  4. Clear Blockages

    If crystallization is found in the lines or at the injector, remove and clean the affected components with warm water. Replace hoses if they are damaged.

  5. Replace the DEF Pump

    If the lines are clear, the filter is new/saturated, there are no external leaks, and the pump still fails to build pressure or has an internal failure, replace the DEF pump assembly.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 004332.14 fault code and run a forced system purge/test cycle to verify the repair.
