Massey Ferguson E4332.16 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF System Pressure Issue (ECU)

Issue description

The AdBlue™ or DEF system pressure is 'above normal'. The system is detecting higher pressure than expected in the DEF supply lines, which is typically caused by a blockage, a failing pressure regulator inside the pump, or a faulty pressure sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect DEF Fluid Quality: Ensure the DEF is clean (32.5% urea solution) and free of dirt, diesel, or water contamination.

  2. Check Heated Lines (Supply & Return): Inspect the insulated DEF lines for kinks, pinched areas, or rub points that could physically restrict flow and cause a high-pressure reading.

  3. Inspect the DEF Doser/Injector: Remove the DEF injector from the exhaust stream and check for severe urea crystallization/buildup blocking the nozzle.

  4. Test the Pressure Sensor & Wiring: Check the wiring harness leading to the DEF pressure sensor for shorts or open circuits that might cause a false 'high pressure' voltage reading.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the System

    If urea crystallization is found at the injector nozzle, clean the injector and the mounting port on the SCR catalyst.

  2. Replace Blocked Components

    If the heated DEF lines are kinked or internally blocked with crystallized DEF that cannot be flushed, replace the affected lines.

  3. Replace the Dosing Unit / Pump

    If the lines and injector are clear but the system still over-pressurizes (or if the pump's internal pressure regulator has failed), remove and replace the DEF pump/dosing module.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If mechanical pressure is verified to be normal via a manual gauge but the ECU still reads high, replace the DEF pressure sensor.

  5. Calibrate and Clear

    After replacing the pump or dosing unit, use Massey Ferguson/AGCO diagnostic software to prime the system, run a DEF system pressure test, calibrate the new module, and clear the E4332.16 fault code.
