Massey Ferguson 4342.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF Return Pipe Heater Resistance Is High (ECU)

The engine management system monitors the electrical circuits that heat the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) lines to prevent freezing. This code sets when the controller detects that the voltage or resistance on the DEF return (backflow) line heater circuit is higher than normal, indicating a short circuit to a high voltage source or an internal failure in the heater element/wiring.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the DEF return line heater for chafed wires, melted insulation, or short circuits to a battery voltage source.

   Check for shared circuit faults if multiple DEF heater codes are present simultaneously, which indicates a common power circuit issue or main relay failure.

   Disconnect the DEF return line heater and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the heater pins to test for an internal short.

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the DEF return (backflow) line, which routes from the DEF dosing unit/supply module back to the DEF tank.
