Massey Ferguson E4376.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): The DEF Reverse Flow Solenoid Valve Low Voltage (ECU)
Issue description
The controller has detected a voltage on the DEF reverse flow solenoid valve circuit that is lower than the expected threshold. This usually points to a short to ground in the wiring harness, a failed (shorted) solenoid coil inside the DEF pump, or an open circuit preventing voltage from reaching the sensor.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the DEF pump assembly. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground.
Connector Check: Disconnect the main electrical connector at the DEF pump. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion (DEF fluid can sometimes wick into the harness), or bent terminals.
Circuit Testing: Using a multimeter, check the continuity of the wires between the ECU and the DEF pump. Test the specific wire for the reverse flow solenoid for a short to ground.
Component Testing: Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins for the reverse flow solenoid valve on the DEF pump side. If the resistance is out of specification (reading near zero), the solenoid itself is internally shorted.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the harness, repair the damaged section of wire using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the DEF Pump
If the solenoid is faulty, replace the DEF pump assembly. Relieve any residual pressure in the DEF lines, disconnect the supply and return lines, disconnect the electrical harness, unbolt the pump, install the new assembly, torque bolts to OEM spec, and reconnect lines and harness.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic scan tool to the tractor, clear the E4376.04 fault code, and run a manual DEF system test (or run the engine until it reaches operating temperature) to verify that the pump builds pressure and successfully purges upon shutdown.
