Massey Ferguson 5035.13 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Issue With Exhaust Top NOx Sensor Module

Issue description

The system is detecting that the downstream NOx sensor (located after the DOC/SCR in the exhaust stream) is either missing its calibration data, is the wrong part number, or has a wiring fault preventing the module from reading its signal.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the downstream NOx sensor for damaged or broken wiring, loose pins, or a short circuit to ground/power.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and check the connector for moisture, melted plastic, or corroded terminals.

  3. Verify that the currently installed sensor is the correct OEM part, as aftermarket sensors often fail to communicate the correct calibration data to the ECU.

  4. Perform a standard system reset by turning the ignition off for a minimum of 60 seconds, then turning it back on to see if the module re-establishes communication with the sensor.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the exhaust aftertreatment system to cool completely to avoid severe burns.

  2. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes to the ECU during replacement.

  3. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the 'Top' or 'Outlet' NOx sensor. This is the downstream sensor located on the exhaust pipe after the SCR catalyst.

  4. Disconnect the Module

    Unplug the NOx sensor's control module connector from the main engine wiring harness.

  5. Remove the Sensor

    Carefully unscrew the NOx sensor probe from the exhaust pipe bung. Note: Exhaust sensors frequently seize due to heat and carbon; apply penetrating oil to the threads and allow it to soak if resistance is high.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM NOx sensor into the exhaust bung and tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Route the Wiring

    Secure the sensor's wiring harness, ensuring it is routed away from extreme heat sources and moving parts, and plug it into the main harness.

  8. Restore Power & Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Connect an AGCO diagnostic service tool (EDT) to clear the 005035.13 fault code. The ECU may require a forced calibration or a system reset (ignition off for 60 seconds) to recognize the new sensor's data.
