Massey Ferguson 51.03 – Engine ECU: Air Throttle Valve Position Sensor Voltage High

The signal voltage from the air throttle actuator position sensor is out of range high. This typically indicates a short circuit to power (12 volts) in the sensor circuit, a damaged wiring harness, or an internal failure of the throttle valve's integrated position sensor.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Intake Throttle Valve (ITV) for any signs of rubbing, melting, or a short circuit to the battery (12V).

   Disconnect the ITV harness connector and check for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion.

   Use a multimeter to check the sensor signal voltage. A reading exceeding the normal 5V reference scale (e.g., >4.8V) confirms the 'Voltage High' condition.

   Verify that the throttle valve flap is not physically jammed or sticking due to carbon buildup, which can sometimes force the actuator motor/sensor into an out-of-range state.

   Prep the Machine

   Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the Intake Throttle Valve on the engine's air intake manifold (typically situated between the intercooler piping and the intake manifold).

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the throttle valve actuator.

   Remove

   Loosen the clamps on the charge air piping connected to the valve. Remove the mounting bolts securing the throttle valve to the intake manifold and remove the unit.

   Clean

   Clean the mating surface on the intake manifold to ensure a proper seal for the new component.

   Install

   Install the new Intake Throttle Valve with a new gasket/seal. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications and reattach the air piping.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new valve and reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Calibrate/Clear

   Use a diagnostic service tool (such as AGCO's Win EEM4) to clear the fault codes. Some systems may require a key-on engine-off cycle to allow the ECU to learn the new throttle valve's end-stops. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
