Massey Ferguson 51.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Air Throttle Valve Position Sensor Voltage Low
Issue description
The controller detects that the voltage signal returning from the Air Throttle Valve (also known as the Intake Throttle Valve or ITV) position sensor has dropped below the acceptable minimum range. This typically indicates a short circuit to ground, a failed sensor, or a wiring harness issue.

Check the cause
Inspect the Air Throttle Valve wiring harness for chafing, bare wires, or a short circuit to ground.
Check the Intake Throttle Valve (ITV) connector for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.
Consider environmental factors, as extreme cold temperatures can cause the valve to stick or falsely trigger throttle position codes.
Test the voltage at the sensor to confirm if the sensor itself has failed internally or if the ECU is not supplying the correct reference voltage.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Repair wiring harness
If the diagnostic checks reveal a short to ground in the wiring harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness.
Replace Air Throttle Valve
If the wiring and connector are in good condition, the fault lies within the Air Throttle Valve position sensor. Because the sensor is typically integrated into the actuator assembly, the entire Air Throttle Valve must be replaced.
Install new valve
Install the new Air Throttle Valve and reconnect the harness.
Finalize repair
Reconnect the battery, clear the ECU fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and perform any required auto-calibration/learning procedures for the new throttle valve.
