Massey Ferguson 51 – Armrest Autotronic 5: X110 - FingerTIP 5 - short circuit 0 V
Issue description
The electronic control system has detected that the signal circuit for the 5th fingertip spool valve control switch (designated as component X110) is shorted to ground (0 Volts), which will typically cause the affected hydraulic valve to lock out or fail to operate as a safety precaution.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- 8600 Series
- 8650
- 8670
- 8690
- 7600 Series
- 7700 Series
- Models utilizing Dyna-4, Dyna-6, or Dyna-VT transmissions with Armrest Autotronic 5
Check the cause
Stop and restart the engine to see if the code clears. If the code remains, the affected valve will remain blocked.
Remove the armrest console cover and visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Armrest Autotronic 5 ECU to the X110 FingerTIP 5 switch. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the metal armrest frame, or exposed copper.
Disconnect the X110 FingerTIP 5 switch and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.
With the switch unplugged, turn the ignition on to isolate the switch. If the fault code changes from AR 51 to AR 52 (Short to 12 V / Open), the short is internal to the fingertip switch. If AR 51 persists, the short to ground is in the wiring harness.
Use a digital multimeter to test the signal wire of the X110 circuit for continuity to a known good ground.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.
Access the Armrest
Remove the retaining screws on the armrest control console to lift the upper plastic housing, exposing the fingertip switches and the Autotronic 5 module.
Address Wiring
If the diagnostic tests pointed to a harness short, locate the chafed wire. Cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire of the same gauge, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.
Replace the Switch
If the switch itself has failed internally: Unplug the electrical connector from the X110 FingerTIP 5 switch. Remove the mounting screws or retaining clips holding the switch module into the armrest bezel. Seat the new OEM fingertip switch into the console and secure it. Plug the electrical connector into the new switch.
Reassembly
Carefully lower the armrest housing back into place, ensuring no wires are pinched in the process, and reinstall the retaining screws.
Calibration and Testing
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and clear the error codes from the instrument panel/control unit. Test the 5th spool valve to ensure full functionality and verify that code AR 51 does not return.
