Massey Ferguson 520200.18 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Low Battery Voltage Detected (ECU)

Issue description

The control module is receiving a power supply voltage that has dropped below the minimum required operating threshold. This condition can cause hard starting, intermittent stalling, loss of communication on the CAN bus, or the tractor entering a protective "limp mode".

Check the cause

  1. Check battery state of charge and health using a multimeter (resting voltage should be ~12.6V) and perform a load test to ensure voltage doesn't drop drastically under load.

  2. Measure charging system output at the battery terminals with the engine running (should read between 13.5V and 14.5V).

  3. Inspect grounds and harness connections, including main battery earth straps, the specific ground wire for the ECU, and main wiring loom connectors for loose pins, rubbed wires, or green corrosion.

  4. Check the main power supply relays and fuses that feed the ECU for signs of failure causing intermittent voltage drops.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the electrical system.

  2. Clean Connections

    Remove the battery terminals and clean the posts and clamps with a wire brush. Trace the negative cable to the chassis and clean the main ground connection.

  3. Replace the Battery/Alternator

    If the battery failed the load test, install a new heavy-duty 12V battery. If the alternator failed the charging test, replace the alternator and verify belt tension.

  4. Service the ECU Power Circuit

    If the battery and alternator are healthy, locate the ECU power relay in the fuse panel. Replace the relay if it shows signs of heat damage or internal resistance. Apply dielectric grease to the ECU harness connectors to prevent future moisture intrusion.

  5. Clear the Code

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 520200.18 fault code. Start the tractor and verify the code does not return.
