Massey Ferguson 520202.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): High Voltage Issue With Module Supply (ECU)

Issue description

The ECU Main Relay (Relay 0 or Relay 1) has a short circuit to a HIGH SOURCE (+12V). The controller is detecting a voltage supply on the main relay circuit that is higher than normal, or a wire is shorted directly to battery voltage.

Check the cause

  1. Test battery and charging system voltage with the engine off (should be 12.4V - 12.6V) and running (if exceeding 14.5V - 15V, the alternator is overcharging)

  2. Test the ECU Main Relay in the fuse/relay panel with a multimeter to ensure internal contacts are not fused together or stuck closed

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU Main Relay and the Engine ECU for chafed insulation causing a short to a constant +12V battery source

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable first to prevent accidental shorts or electrical spikes while working on the ECU circuit.

  2. Swap/Replace the Relay

    If the ECU Main Relay fails a continuity test (or if you suspect it is sticking intermittently), replace it with a known-good relay of the same amperage.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If a short to +12V is found in the harness between the relay box and the ECU, splice and repair the damaged section of the wire using weather-resistant heat shrink connectors.

  4. Address Alternator Overvoltage

    If the diagnostic checks revealed an overcharging alternator, replace the alternator voltage regulator (or the entire alternator assembly) to prevent frying the replacement relays or the ECU.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a dealer diagnostic tool to clear the DTC 520202.03.

  6. ECU Replacement (Worst Case)

    If the relay, wiring, and charging system are all perfect but the code persists and the tractor experiences engine derating/shutoffs, the Engine ECU has suffered an internal hardware fault and must be replaced and reprogrammed.
