Issue description

The electrical voltage being supplied to the control module has exceeded the maximum safe operating threshold. This is most commonly caused by an overcharging alternator (a failed voltage regulator) or a short-to-power in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a live voltage test using a multimeter on the battery while the engine is running (voltage >15V indicates an overcharging cause from a failed alternator voltage regulator).

  2. Test the battery capacity to ensure it hasn't failed internally, which can cause the alternator to overcompensate.

  3. Inspect, clean, and tighten all primary ground straps and battery terminals to rule out erratic voltage spikes from poor grounds.

  4. Check the wiring harness leading to the ECU for rub points or melted insulation that could cause a short-to-power.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the battery (negative terminal first) before performing any electrical repairs to prevent further damage to the ECU.

  2. Replace the Alternator

    If the live voltage test confirmed an overcharging condition, remove the drive belt and unbolt the faulty alternator. Install the new alternator and tension the fan/drive belt to spec.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the alternator was testing fine, repair any damaged harnesses or replace corroded electrical connectors found during the diagnostic phase.

  4. Clean Grounds

    Wire-brush all chassis and engine ground connections and re-secure them tightly.

  5. Verify Repair

    Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 520204.03 fault code. Start the tractor and monitor the live system voltage during a road/field test to confirm the voltage remains stable. (Note: If the code immediately returns and voltage is normal, the overvoltage event may have permanently damaged the ECU, requiring ECU replacement or specialized board repair).
