Massey Ferguson 520233.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Rail Pressure Below Requested Pressure

The engine control system has detected that the actual fuel pressure in the common rail is lower than the target pressure requested by the ECU. This can be caused by a leak on the high-pressure side of the injection system, a defective rail pressure sensor, a failing high-pressure pump, or an internal logic/hardware fault within the ECU itself.

   Check the operation with another known-good rail pressure sensor to determine if the current sensor is giving a false low reading.

   Check for physical fuel leaks in the common rail, high-pressure lines, and injector connections under both low idle and load conditions.

   Check the diagnostic data to see if the current for the MPROP (fuel metering proportional valve) is higher than the limit value. A maxed-out MPROP indicates the pump is trying to compensate for a massive pressure drop.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the rail pressure sensor for shorts to ground, shorts to power, or open circuits.

   Verify if the ECU requires a software update/reflash to correct a WDA/ABE shut-off logic error (Internal Fault 0128).

   Visual Inspection

   Thoroughly inspect the high-pressure fuel lines, common rail, and injectors for any signs of external fuel leakage. Tighten any loose fittings to OEM torque specs.

   Harness Testing

   Disconnect the rail pressure sensor and use a multimeter to verify the 5V reference supply, ground, and signal return to the Engine ECU pins. Repair any damaged wiring.

   Sensor Replacement

   If the wiring is intact and no leaks are found, replace the fuel rail pressure sensor. (Note: OEM manuals state that rail pressure sensor removal and replacement should be performed only by qualified injection system service personnel due to extreme high pressures).

   Pump/Injector Testing

   If the new sensor does not resolve the code, perform a fuel return volume test on the injectors and test the high-pressure fuel pump to isolate internal bypass leaks.

   ECU Replacement/Reflash

   If the fuel system mechanically holds pressure but the ECU continues to log 520233.31 (Internal Fault 0128), the Engine ECU itself has failed or requires a dealer-level software reflash.
