520235.31

Massey Ferguson 520235.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / AGCO SISU POWER EEM4: ECU internal fault 0130 / Diagnostic fault check to report ABE active due to overvoltage detection

Issue description

The controller has detected an internal hardware or logic failure, often triggered by an overvoltage event (such as a failing alternator or a voltage spike from jump-starting) that forces the module into a protective cut-off or limp state.

Check the cause

  1. Test battery voltage and alternator output while running to ensure the alternator is not overcharging (outputting significantly more than 14V).

  2. Inspect the main wiring harnesses connecting to the EEM4 ECU for water intrusion, pin corrosion, or chafed wires shorting voltage to the ECU casing or sensor grounds.

  3. Connect an AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) or compatible scanner to attempt clearing the code. If it returns immediately as an active hard fault without the engine running, the ECU is permanently damaged.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable, followed by the positive cable, to prevent any further electrical spikes during removal.

  2. Remove the ECU

Locate the EEM4 Engine ECU. Carefully release the locking tabs on the primary and secondary wiring harness connectors and unplug them. Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to the machine and remove the unit.

  3. Repair or Replace

Send the unit to an agricultural electronics repair specialist (e.g., UpFix) who can open the housing, repair burnt resistors/capacitors caused by the overvoltage, and re-seal the unit, OR procure a new or remanufactured EEM4 ECU.

  4. Installation

Mount the new/repaired ECU and secure the bolts. Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated. Reconnect the battery.

  5. Programming (If Replaced)

A new or remanufactured ECU will require EOL (End Of Line) programming. Connect the AGCO EDT / WinEEM4 service tool to flash the correct engine software and calibrate the module to the tractor's specific immobilizer and CAN bus network.

  6. Final Testing

Clear all historical fault codes and run the tractor to verify the 520235.31 code does not return.
