Massey Ferguson 520236.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EEM4: ECU internal fault 0131

The engine's monitoring system has detected an internal failure. Specifically, the ECU's internal watchdog (WDA) or shut-off path (ABE) was activated for an unknown reason. This is typically caused by either a direct internal hardware defect within the ECU itself, or a slow dropping of the vehicle's electrical system voltage (such as a defective battery) that triggers the watchdog without registering as a standard undervoltage fault.

   Measure the 12V supply voltage to the ECU to rule out a slow-dropping voltage from a weak battery, which can trigger this fault logic.

   Connect the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) or WinEEM4, save the error log, and then erase it.

   Power cycle the ECU by turning the ignition key off, waiting for the main relay to click off, and then turning it back on.

   Test drive the tractor. If the fault does not return, it was likely a transient voltage anomaly. If it returns, the ECU hardware is defective.

   If possible, temporarily swap the ECU with a known-good EEM4 controller to verify if the fault follows the module.

   Preparation

   Connect the AGCO EDT device to the tractor. Open the 'Diagnostic Test' page, select 'Save & Upload Engine Log', and save the engine log information.

   Save Injector Codes

   Open the 'Calibration' tab and check the IQA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) codes. Save these codes for later use.

   Deactivate Old ECU

   Open 'Configuration', select 'Engine ECU Replacement', and push start. Follow the EDT prompts to deactivate the old EEM4 unit. Turn the ignition switch to OFF and wait for 2 minutes until power is completely cut off from the tractor control units.

   Physical Replacement

   Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the old EEM4 unit and unbolt it from the engine block. Install the new EEM4 unit and reconnect the harnesses.

   Activation

   Turn the ignition switch to ON. The EDT will read the serial number of the new EEM4 unit. Follow the on-screen prompts to activate the new unit, flash the correct software, and write the saved IQA codes to the new controller.
