Massey Ferguson 520243.31 – Engine ECU: Rail PRV is forced to open; perform pressure increase

The engine control system has detected a dangerous overpressure condition in the common rail fuel system. The ECU has commanded or mechanically forced the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) to open to dump the excess pressure, resulting in heavily reduced engine power (Degradation Level 3 / Limp Mode).

   Check for related fault codes related to the Fuel Metering Unit/MPROP (e.g., SPN 1076) or Rail Pressure Sensor (e.g., SPN 157).

   Test the Fuel Metering Unit (MPROP) located on the high-pressure fuel pump. A sticking MPROP is the most common cause of rail overpressure.

   Test the Rail Pressure Sensor to verify it is reading accurately. If it falsely reads low pressure, the ECU will command maximum pressure and blow the PRV open.

   Check the PRV opening count using the WinEEM3 or EEM4 Service Tool. If it has reached its maximum allowed opening count (triggering SPN 520245.31), the PRV is permanently weakened and must be replaced.

   Relieve fuel system pressure

   Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has completely depressurized before opening any lines.

   Repair root cause

   Replace the faulty Fuel Metering Unit (MPROP) or Rail Pressure Sensor based on your diagnostic findings. Do not replace the PRV without fixing the root cause, or it will blow open again.

   Replace the PRV (if necessary)

   If the PRV has popped multiple times or reached its maximum opening count, remove the old PRV from the fuel rail and install a new one. Torque to OEM specifications. Note: On some specific rail designs, the PRV is not sold separately and the entire fuel rail manifold must be replaced.

   Bleed the fuel system

   Prime the low-pressure fuel circuit to remove air from the system.

   Reset ECU counters

   Connect the AGCO EDT / EEM Service Tool. You must clear the fault codes and use the software configuration screen to redefine the opening count of the Rail Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) back to zero. If you do not reset this counter, the ECU will keep the tractor in limp mode.
