Massey Ferguson 520244.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Rail Pressure Relief Valve (ECU)

The engine monitoring system has intentionally forced the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) to open by increasing the fuel rail pressure. This is an engine safety function designed to protect the common rail system from catastrophic over-pressurization, typically resulting in degraded engine power.

   Visually inspect all fuel lines to detect mechanical failures, blockages, or leaks

   Test the fuel rail pressure sensor and its wiring harness for proper voltage and operation (a false high-pressure reading will cause the ECU to command the PRV open)

   Test the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors for proper operation and excessive return leakage

   If all mechanical and sensor checks pass, temporarily swap the ECU with a known-good EEM4 controller to verify if the original ECU is defective

   Clean the Area

   Extreme cleanliness is required before opening the common rail fuel system. Even microscopic contamination can destroy common rail components.

   Relieve Pressure

   Ensure the engine is off and allow time for the high-pressure fuel system to depressurize.

   Remove the Valve

   Locate the Fuel Rail Pressure Relief Valve on the fuel rail. Disconnect the fuel return line attached to it, then unthread the defective PRV from the rail.

   Install the New Valve

   Thread the new PRV into the fuel rail. You must use a torque wrench and adhere strictly to the torque setting specified in your specific engine's workshop manual.

   Reassemble

   Reconnect the fuel return line using new sealing washers if applicable.

   Prime the System

   Prime the fuel system using fresh, filtered fuel.

   Clear Codes

   Use a diagnostic tool to clear the EEM4 fault codes (including 520244.31).

   Test

   Start the engine, check for leaks, and verify that rail pressure remains stable under load without the PRV popping off.
