E520245.31

Massey Ferguson E520245.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Rail PRV reached maximum allowed opening count

Issue description

The PRV (Pressure Relief Valve) on the common fuel rail has reached its maximum programmed number of opening counts. The valve relies on an internal mechanical spring that fatigues after repeatedly popping open to relieve excess pressure, meaning it can no longer be trusted to hold normal operating pressure and must be replaced.

Check the cause

  1. Check for active MPROP (Fuel Metering Valve) codes (e.g., SPN 1076). A failed MPROP or shorted wiring can command maximum fuel pressure, forcing the PRV open.

  2. Check the fuel rail pressure sensor. A faulty sensor reading artificially low will cause the ECU to over-pressurize the rail.

  3. Inspect fuel return lines for blockages or kinks that would prevent the PRV from properly venting excess pressure.

  4. Use a diagnostic tool to monitor live data, comparing 'Desired Fuel Rail Pressure' against 'Actual Fuel Rail Pressure' while the engine is running.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the fuel rail and the area around the PRV before disassembly.

  2. Relieve Pressure

Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has fully depressurized.

  3. Remove the Old Valve

Disconnect the fuel return line from the PRV. Unscrew the PRV from the common rail.

  4. Install the New Valve

Thread the new PRV into the fuel rail and torque it to the manufacturer's exact specifications. Reconnect the fuel return line.

  5. Prime the System

Use fresh, filtered fuel to prime the fuel system.

  6. Reset the ECU Counter

Connect the AGCO EDT (Electronic Diagnostic Tool) or WinEEM service tool. Navigate to the Engine ECU configuration screen and execute the command to 'Redefine the opening count of the Rail Pressure Relief Valve - PRV' (reset it to zero).

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Clear the E520245.31 code, start the engine, check for leaks, and verify normal rail pressure operation.
