Massey Ferguson 520246.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Rail Pressure Relief Valve (ECU)

Issue description

The ECU detects that the Fuel Rail Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) has opened due to system over-pressurization, or that the valve has weakened/failed and is leaking fuel pressure back into the return system instead of holding it under load. This often results in a lack of power, poor fuel economy, hard starting, or a no-start condition.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Related Active Codes: Ensure there are no active codes for the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor or the Fuel Control Actuator (FCA). A faulty FCA can cause actual over-pressurization, forcing a perfectly good PRV to open.

  2. Electronic Service Tool Test: Use the Massey Ferguson/AGCO electronic diagnostic tool to perform a 'Fuel Rail Pressure Relief Valve Test'. This automated test identifies excessive leakage through the pressure limiting valve.

  3. Physical Leak-Off Test: Measure the fuel leakage from the fuel rail pressure relief valve's return line. If the engine will not start, perform this test while cranking the engine. If fuel is heavily bleeding from the valve during cranking or under normal load, the valve is weak/stuck open and must be replaced.

  4. Monitor Rail Pressure: Compare 'Actual' vs. 'Desired' fuel rail pressure using a diagnostic scanner. If actual pressure drops significantly under heavy load, the PRV is likely bleeding off pressure prematurely.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the engine and allow it to cool. Crucial: Relieve all fuel system pressure before opening any high-pressure fuel lines to prevent severe injury.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Find the Fuel Rail Pressure Relief Valve, which is threaded directly into the common fuel rail.

  3. Disconnect Lines

    Remove the fuel return line connected to the top/end of the relief valve.

  4. Remove the Valve

    Unscrew the faulty pressure relief valve from the fuel rail.

  5. Install New Valve

    Thread the new replacement valve into the fuel rail. Torque it strictly to the OEM specifications found in your specific engine's service manual (improper torque can cause leaks or damage the rail).

  6. Reassemble

    Reattach the fuel return line.

  7. Prime the System

    Prime the fuel system to purge any introduced air.

  8. Clear Codes & Test

    Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 520246.31 DTC. Start the engine, check for leaks around the rail, and test drive under load to verify that rail pressure remains stable.
