Massey Ferguson 520247.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Module Internal Issue (ECU)
Issue description
ECU internal fault 0123 or Reported SPI and COM-Errors of a Cy146. Internal communication (SPI) with the Cy146 microchip inside the engine control unit has failed, indicating a hardware or internal processing error within the module itself.

Check the cause
Check Battery Voltage: Verify that the battery voltage is stable. Severe voltage drops or alternator spikes can cause internal ECU communication errors.
Inspect ECU Power and Ground: Check the main power and ground harness connections directly at the Engine ECU. Look for corroded, bent, or loose pins.
Clear and Retest: Clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool and cycle the ignition. If the code was caused by a temporary voltage glitch, it may not return. If the code is 'Active' and immediately returns upon key-on, the ECU's internal Cy146 chip has permanently failed.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical arcing.
Locate ECU
Locate the Engine ECU, which is typically mounted directly to the side of the engine block.
Disconnect wiring harnesses
Carefully unlock and disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECU (these are typically large 154-pin or 192-pin connectors depending on the Tier 4i/Stage 3b installation).
Remove ECU
Unbolt the ECU from its mounting bracket and remove it from the machine.
Install replacement ECU
Install the replacement Engine ECU and secure the mounting bolts.
Reconnect wiring and battery
Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated, then reconnect the battery.
Program new ECU
Programming Required: A new ECU will be blank or lack the specific tractor's configuration. You must use the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) / WinEEM3 or WinEEM4 service tool to flash the correct engine software and parameter files matching the tractor's exact engine serial number.
