Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage and alternator output to rule out voltage spikes or severe drops causing temporary internal communication failures.

  2. Inspect the main wiring harness connectors at the Engine ECU for pushed-out pins, severe corrosion, or signs of water intrusion.

  3. Use a diagnostic tool (such as AGCO EDT or Jaltest AGV) to clear the fault code from history and operate the tractor to see if it returns. If active and cannot be cleared, the ECU hardware has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery (negative terminal first) to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Remove the ECU

Locate the EEM4 Engine ECU (typically mounted on the side of the engine block or firewall, depending on the model). Disconnect the multi-pin harness connectors and unbolt the unit.

  3. Determine Repair vs. Replace

Option A (Repair): Send the ECU to a specialized agricultural electronics repair facility to repair the damaged internal Cy146 communication circuits/solder joints. Option B (Replace): Procure a new or remanufactured ECU from an AGCO dealer.

  4. Install and Program

If installing a new ECU, mount the unit and reconnect the harnesses. A new ECU will be blank or in a base state; it must be flashed/programmed with the specific software for your tractor's VIN and engine serial number using the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT).

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EEM4 Controller

Varies by specific tractor model and engine serial number. Consult the AGCO Parts Book with the machine's exact Engine Serial Number to order the correct replacement module.
