Massey Ferguson E520295.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Rail Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) Issue

The engine control system has detected that the mechanical pressure relief valve on the common fuel rail has been forced open (usually due to an overpressure event) or has failed, causing a loss of regulated fuel rail pressure.

   Check ECU PRV Counters using a dealer diagnostic tool to see if the maximum allowed count has been exceeded

   Monitor live data for fuel rail pressure sensor readings and compare actual rail pressure to commanded pressure

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU, fuel metering unit, and rail pressure sensor for shorts, open circuits, or corrosion

   Physically inspect the PRV to verify it is not leaking fuel or stuck in the open position

   Depressurize the System

   Turn off the machine, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine to cool. Ensure all high-pressure fuel in the common rail has dissipated before opening the system to avoid severe injury.

   Locate the PRV

   Locate the common fuel rail on the engine block and identify the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) / Pressure Regulating Valve.

   Remove the Faulty Valve

   Disconnect any return lines or electrical connectors attached to the PRV, then unthread and remove the faulty PRV from the fuel rail. (Note: Once a mechanical PRV pops due to overpressure, its internal spring is often weakened or damaged and must be replaced).

   Install the New Valve

   Install the new Fuel Rail Pressure Relief Valve and torque it strictly to OEM specifications.

   Bleed the System

   Reconnect all fuel lines and bleed the fuel system to remove any trapped air.

   Perform an ECU Software Reset

   You must use a dealer diagnostic tool (such as AGCO EDT) to reset the PRV opening count/timers in the ECU's EEPROM. If this software reset is not performed, the ECU will continue to restrict engine performance (limp mode) even with a brand-new valve installed.

   Test Run

   Clear the E520295.31 fault code and test run the tractor under load to verify normal rail pressure is maintained.
