520295.31

Massey Ferguson 520295.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Rail PRV Quantity balance check if a successful PRV opening is ensured

Issue description

The engine control module has detected that the mechanical Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) on the common fuel rail has been forced open because the fuel rail pressure exceeded safe operating limits.

Check the cause

  1. Check for related active codes indicating rail pressure above normal (e.g., SPN 157) or MPROP circuit faults (e.g., SPN 1076)

  2. Test the MPROP Valve (Fuel Metering Unit) on the high-pressure injection pump for sticking or electrical failure. Unplugging it forces rail pressure wide open to listen for engine sound changes

  3. Check the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor to ensure it is not sending erratic or falsely low readings to the ECU

  4. Perform an Injector Leak-Off Test using a beaker tool to ensure injectors are not leaking or causing erratic rail pressure fluctuations

Repair steps

  1. Resolve the Overpressure Source

Diagnose and replace the faulty component causing the pressure spike (usually a sticking MPROP valve or a faulty rail pressure sensor).

  2. Relieve Fuel System Pressure

Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has safely depressurized.

  3. Replace the PRV

Remove the popped Pressure Relief Valve from the fuel rail manifold and install a new one. Note: The PRV is a mechanical safety device. Once forced open, its internal spring is weakened or damaged and it cannot be reset; it must be replaced.

  4. Bleed the Fuel System

Prime the fuel system using clean, filtered fuel to prevent microscopic contamination from damaging the new common rail components.

  5. Reset the ECU

Use the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to clear the fault codes and reset the PRV opening counter in the software.
