Massey Ferguson E520296.31 – Engine ECU: Fuel Rail Pressure High (ECU)

Issue description

The pressure regulating valve on the common fuel rail is detecting that the fuel pressure is outside the permitted tolerance (too high). The system cannot properly regulate or vent excess pressure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the circuits connecting the ECU to the fuel rail pressure sensor and the pressure relief/control valves for broken wires, chafing, or bad connections that could send a falsely high parameter to the ECU.

  2. Use a diagnostic tool to read the Key-On, Engine-Off (KOEO) rail pressure. If it reads a high PSI when the engine is off, the sensor is likely skewed and needs replacement.

  3. Ensure there are no blockages, kinks, or restrictions in the fuel return lines, which would prevent the system from bleeding off excess pressure.

  4. If the sensor and wiring are good, check the fuel pressure control valve (metering unit) or the mechanical pressure relief valve (limit valve) to see if they are stuck closed or failing to regulate pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation & Cleanliness

    Clean the engine area around the fuel rail thoroughly. Common rail systems require absolute cleanliness; even microscopic contamination can destroy sensitive injection components. Have clean rags ready.

  2. Depressurize

    Ensure the engine is off and the fuel system is fully depressurized before cracking any high-pressure lines.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty component (sensor, control valve, or relief valve). Carefully unthread the component from the common rail.

  4. Installation

    Install the new OEM replacement part. Do not use sealants that could contaminate the rail. Torque the component to the manufacturer's exact specifications.

  5. Priming

    Always use fresh, filtered fuel. Cycle the ignition key several times to allow the electric lift pump to build system pressure and bleed air before attempting to start the engine.

  6. Verification

    Start the tractor. It may run rough for a moment as remaining air purges. Connect your diagnostic tool, verify that the fuel rail pressure is now within normal operating parameters, and clear the E520296.31 fault code from the ECU.
