Issue description

Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The electronic control modules are unable to exchange information correctly due to an interruption in the network, which can be caused by wiring issues, connector problems, or a module failure.

Check the cause

  1. Test battery and charging system to ensure the battery holds a proper charge and the alternator outputs stable voltage (diagnosing weak power supply cause).

  2. Check the main power supply and ground circuits leading to the ECU (diagnosing bad ground cause).

  3. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness and ECU connector pins for loose wiring, corrosion, bent pins, or chafed wires shorting to the chassis (diagnosing physical wiring break or short cause).

  4. Check if other modules (e.g., AdBlue/DEF module or transmission controller) are logging CAN faults to help isolate the break in the network (diagnosing network interruption location).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on the ECU or CAN bus wiring to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean Connections

    Disconnect the main harnesses from the ECU. Use a dedicated electrical contact cleaner to clean the pins and connectors.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If any chafed or broken wires are found in the CAN bus twisted pair (CAN High / CAN Low), splice and repair them using proper heat-shrink connectors to ensure weatherproofing and maintain the twist rate of the wires.

  4. Test CAN Resistance

    With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one of the terminating resistors or a segment of the wiring is broken.

  5. Replace/Reprogram ECU

    If the wiring, grounds, and power supply all test perfectly and the CAN resistance is correct, the CAN transceiver inside the ECU has likely failed. The ECU will need to be replaced and flashed/programmed by a dealer to match the tractor.
