520298.31

Massey Ferguson 520298.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / AGCO SISU POWER EEM4: ECU internal fault 0133

Issue description

The Electronic Engine Management (EEM4) monitoring system has detected an internal failure within the module. The possible reason is an ECU hardware defect. When this occurs, the fault code is stored, a warning lamp is activated, and a CAN message indicates an active fault.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a system reset by turning the ignition off for a minimum of 60 seconds, then turn it back on

  2. Re-evaluate the system to check if fault code SPN 520298 FMI 31 returns after the hard reset

  3. Test with a known-good module; if the fault is not active when a replacement ECU is plugged in, it confirms the original ECU has an internal hardware defect

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Disconnect harnesses

Locate the EEM4 Engine Control Unit and disconnect the primary and secondary wiring harnesses.

  3. Remove ECU

Unbolt and remove the defective ECU.

  4. Install replacement ECU

Install the replacement ECU and reconnect the harnesses.

  5. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  6. Program and activate ECU

The new ECU must be activated with an activation code requested directly from AGCO SISU POWER. Note: If this step is skipped, the tractor will throw a secondary fault code (SPN 520230, FMI 31: Engine specification mismatch) and will not operate correctly.

  7. Clear codes and verify

Turn the ignition on and use a Service Tool (PC diagnostic software) to clear historical codes and verify that SPN 520298.31 is no longer active.
