Issue description

The engine's common rail fuel pressure has exceeded the maximum safe limit too many times, forcing the system into an over-pressure protection mode (limp mode) to prevent catastrophic damage to the fuel injectors or the rail itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and the Suction Control Valve (SCV) / Fuel Metering Unit for chafing, corrosion, or short circuits.

  2. Use a diagnostic tool to monitor 'Actual Fuel Rail Pressure' versus 'Desired Fuel Rail Pressure'. If actual pressure reads extremely high even when the engine is off, the sensor is likely faulty (false high reading cause).

  3. Check the Suction Control Valve (SCV) on the high-pressure pump. If live data shows actual pressure spiking uncontrollably while running, the SCV may be mechanically stuck open (actual over-pressure cause).

  4. Ensure there are no blockages or kinks in the fuel return lines, which can cause pressure to back up into the system.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Fuel Pressure

    Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has had time to depressurize before opening any lines.

  2. Address the Sensor (If Faulty)

    If diagnostics point to a false high reading, disconnect the electrical connector from the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor. Unthread the old sensor from the fuel rail, install the new sensor (torque to OEM spec), and reconnect the harness.

  3. Address the SCV (If Pressure is Actually High)

    If the pump is over-pressurizing the rail, locate the Suction Control Valve (Fuel Pressure Regulator) on the high-pressure fuel pump. Disconnect its wiring harness, remove the mounting bolts, and extract the valve. Lubricate the O-rings on the new SCV with clean diesel fuel, install it into the pump, and secure the bolts.

  4. Clear Codes and Test

    Connect your diagnostic tool, clear the 520309.31 fault code, and start the engine. Monitor the live fuel rail pressure to ensure it now matches the desired pressure curve without spiking.
