Massey Ferguson 520320.31 – Engine ECU: There Is A Problem With The Fuel Rail Pressure When The Tractor Is In Limp Mode Or Active Derate
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the fuel rail pressure has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold (often around 2250.0 bar or 32,625 psi) while the tractor is operating in a restricted limp home mode. This indicates a loss of fuel pressure control, usually resulting in a forced engine power degradation or shutdown.

Check the cause
Clear and Retest: Save the error log, erase it, and restart the ECU. If the fault returns during the next driving cycle, proceed with physical diagnostics.
Wiring and Harness Inspection: Check the wiring, harness connectors, and contact surfaces of the connector pins for the fuel metering unit and the rail pressure sensor. Look for oxidation, damaged wires, loose machine earths, or water/debris inside the connectors.
Fuel Metering Unit (ZME Valve): Test the fuel metering unit on the high-pressure pump for mechanical failure or electrical shorts (short to battery or ground).
Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor: Verify the sensor is reading accurately and not sending a falsely high voltage signal to the ECU.
Pressure Relief Valve (PRV): Check if the mechanical pressure relief valve on the fuel rail has been forced open or is leaking due to the pressure shock.
Repair steps
Safety First
Stop the engine and allow it to cool completely before starting work. Do not attempt to start the engine or crack high-pressure fuel lines during the service procedures, as common rail systems operate at fatally high pressures.
Inspect Electrical Connections
Disconnect the Engine ECU, fuel rail pressure sensor, and fuel metering unit connectors. Clean the pins with contact cleaner and verify continuity across the harness.
Replace the Faulty Component
If the wiring is intact but pressure control is lost, the most common culprit is a sticking/failed Fuel Metering Unit (Suction Control Valve) on the high-pressure fuel pump. Remove the old unit and install the replacement. If diagnostics point to a faulty reading rather than an actual overpressure event, replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor.
Reassemble and Prime
Reconnect all harnesses and fuel lines. Prime the fuel system to remove any air.
Clear Codes
Use an AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) or compatible scanner to clear the 520320.31 fault code and reset the ECU.
Test Run
Start the tractor and monitor the live fuel rail pressure data to ensure it stays within the specified setpoint range and the tractor successfully exits limp mode.
