Massey Ferguson E521001.04 – ECU: Low Voltage Issue With DEF Heater Relay Latching Supply Voltage / DEF Module Heater Resistance Is Low

The system has detected that the voltage supplied to the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) heater relay latching circuit has dropped below the minimum threshold, or the resistance in the DEF module heater circuit is abnormally low. A low resistance reading typically points to a short circuit to ground within the wiring harness or a failed internal heating element inside the DEF module.

   Stop the engine and let the machine cool down completely before starting work on the exhaust/DEF system

   Test the main battery voltage with a multimeter (should be around 12.6V) to rule out a systemic low-voltage issue causing the ECU to trigger the code

   Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU, the DEF heater relay, and the DEF module for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas shorting to the chassis (ground)

   Check for damaged, loose, or corroded machine earths (grounds) and connector pins, and look for water ingress or debris inside the DEF module connectors

   Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the DEF module heater element (resistance below OEM specifications indicates a dead short and failed element)

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Locate the DEF Heater Relay.

   Usually located in the main electrical fuse/relay distribution box or mounted near the DEF supply module.

   Remove the relay and inspect the socket terminals for corrosion or heat damage.

   Test the relay.

   If it is sticking or fails to latch properly under load, replace it with a new OEM relay.

   Trace the wiring down to the DEF module heater.

   If the relay and socket are in good condition, repair any broken or shorted wires and clean all ground terminals.

   Replace the DEF Module Heater assembly.

   If the wiring is intact but your diagnostic resistance test showed a short inside the heater.

   Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use a compatible diagnostic scan tool to clear the E521001.04 fault code.

   Run the tractor and monitor the DEF system parameters to ensure the code does not return.
