Massey Ferguson 521001.14 – ECU: DEF Module Heater High Voltage (ECU)

The system has detected that the voltage on the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) module heater circuit is higher than the expected or allowable threshold. This typically indicates a "short to power" in the wiring harness, a faulty DEF heater relay that is stuck closed and constantly sending voltage, or an internal electrical failure within the DEF supply module's heating element.

   Check the Relay: Locate the DEF Module Heater Relay (identified in AGCO fuse panels as Relay R5). Test the relay to see if the internal contacts are stuck closed, which would send constant high voltage to the heater.

   Inspect the Wiring Harness: Disconnect the DEF supply module. Turn the key ON and use a multimeter to check for voltage at the heater pins. If high voltage is present when the ECU is not commanding the heater on, trace the wiring harness back to the ECU and Relay R5 to find a short-to-power (chafed wires touching a 12V source).

   Inspect Connectors: Check the DEF tank and pump module connectors for corrosion, DEF fluid intrusion (which can cause electrical shorts), or melted pins.

   Test Heater Resistance: Test the resistance of the DEF module heater element itself to rule out an internal short circuit.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Relay Replacement (If Applicable)

   If Relay R5 failed your diagnostic test, pull the old relay from the fuse panel and install a new OEM relay.

   Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

   If a short-to-power was found in the harness, repair the damaged section of wire using weatherproof heat-shrink connectors and re-loom the harness away from hot exhaust components or sharp frame edges.

   Module Replacement (If Applicable)

   If the DEF supply module heater is internally shorted, the module must be replaced. Drain the DEF tank (ensure absolute cleanliness), disconnect the heated DEF lines and electrical connectors, unbolt and remove the old DEF supply module, install the new module, reconnect the lines, and refill the tank with fresh DEF.

   Filter Maintenance

   It is highly recommended to replace the DEF filter whenever opening the DEF system to prevent contamination.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use a compatible diagnostic scan tool to clear the 521001.14 DTC from the ECU. Run the tractor to verify the code does not return.
