Issue description

The controller is detecting a voltage on the solenoid's circuit that exceeds the expected normal operating range. This is typically caused by a short to power in the wiring harness, an open circuit, or an internal failure (short) within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the DEF pump assembly for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines.

  2. Disconnect the DEF reverse flow solenoid connector and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the solenoid coil pins (infinite indicates an open circuit, 0 indicates a dead short).

  4. With the key ON (engine OFF) and the solenoid disconnected, probe the harness side to verify if voltage is constantly present (indicating a short to power).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the DEF pump supply module, which houses the reverse flow solenoid valve.

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the DEF pump to prevent dirt or contaminants from entering the sensitive SCR/DEF system during disassembly.

  4. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid valve.

  5. Remove the Solenoid

    Depending on the specific Bosch/AGCO DEF pump revision on your machine, remove the retaining fasteners holding the solenoid to the pump block. (Note: On some pump modules, the solenoid is integrated and the entire DEF pump supply module must be replaced).

  6. Install the New Part

    Seat the new solenoid valve (or pump assembly) and secure the fasteners.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the battery.

  8. System Test

    Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Start the engine, let it run for a few minutes, and then shut it down. Listen near the DEF tank for the pump running backward—this confirms the reverse flow purge cycle is operating correctly.
