Massey Ferguson E521003.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): High Voltage Issue With DEF Heater Relay Latching Supply Voltage (ECU)

The Engine Control Unit has detected a short circuit to a high voltage source (battery) or an open load on the DEF heater main relay actuator power stage. This prevents the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) heating system from operating correctly, which is required to keep the fluid from freezing in cold temperatures.

   Stop the engine and let it cool completely before starting work. Do not start the engine during the service procedures.

   Check for any damaged, corroded, or loose machine earths (ground connections).

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector pins between the Engine ECU and the DEF Heater Relay. Look specifically for chafed wires causing a short to battery voltage, loose connector pins, or debris/water ingress inside the connectors.

   Locate the DEF Heater Relay (often designated as relay K22 or similar in the main fuse/relay panel) and test the relay with a multimeter to see if the internal coil is shorted to the power supply or if it is stuck closed.

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery

   to prevent further electrical shorts during repair.

   Locate the main fuse and relay box.

   Identify the DEF Heater Relay.

   Remove the relay and inspect the socket terminals

   for melting, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

   Repair the damaged wire and apply heat-shrink tubing.

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring short in the harness between the ECU and the relay block.

   Replace the DEF Heater Relay with a new unit.

   If the wiring is intact but the relay failed the multimeter test (or if the socket shows signs of the relay overheating).

   Reconnect the battery.

   Use a compatible diagnostic scan tool to clear the E521003.03 DTC

   from the Engine ECU.

   Cycle the key and confirm the reset was successful

   and the code does not return.
