Massey Ferguson 521003.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF Module Heater Resistance Is Low (ECU) / Low Voltage Issue With DEF Heater Relay Latching Supply Voltage (ECU)

The system has detected that the electrical resistance in the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) module heater circuit has dropped below the acceptable threshold, or there is a low voltage condition on the relay that supplies power to it. This typically points to a short circuit to ground, a failed relay, damaged wiring, or an internally shorted DEF heater element.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU, the DEF heater relay, and the DEF module heater for chafed wires, damaged insulation, or loose machine earths

   Check the connector pins at the DEF module heater for contamination, debris, corrosion, or water ingress that could cause a short circuit

   Test the DEF heater relay (often R5 or K22) for internal shorts, or swap it with a known good relay of the same amperage

   Measure the resistance across the DEF module heater terminals with a multimeter (near zero or below OEM spec indicates an internal short)

   Verify the latching supply voltage at the relay to ensure the circuit is receiving adequate power from the battery/fuse panel

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Relay Replacement

   If diagnostic tests point to the relay, remove the faulty DEF heater relay from the fuse block and install a new OEM relay.

   Wiring Repair

   If chafed wires or corroded connectors were found, repair the wiring harness using waterproof heat-shrink connectors and clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner.

   DEF Module Heater Replacement

   Drain the DEF tank if the heater element is integrated into the tank/pump module assembly in a way that requires fluid removal. Disconnect the electrical harness and DEF fluid lines from the DEF module heater. Unbolt and remove the faulty heater module. Install the new DEF module heater, ensuring all O-rings or gaskets are properly seated to prevent leaks. Reconnect the fluid lines and electrical connectors.

   Reassembly and Testing

   Reconnect the battery. Refill the DEF tank if it was drained. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 521003.04 DTC. Start the engine and monitor the system to ensure the code does not return and the DEF system operates normally.
