Issue description

The Electronic Engine Management (EEM4) monitoring system has detected a short circuit to ground on the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) heater main relay control circuit. This means the voltage on the control circuit is lower than expected, typically caused by a defective relay or damaged wiring shorting to the chassis/ground.

Check the cause

  3. ECU Verification: If the wiring and relay are intact, verify the ECU operation by testing with a replacement EEM4 controller to rule out an internal ECU driver failure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Relay

    Access the main fuse and relay panel (location varies by tractor series, usually in the cab console or under the hood) and locate the DEF Heater Main Relay.

  3. Replace the Relay

    If the diagnostic swap test proved the relay was defective, remove the old relay and install a new OEM replacement.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the relay was good but the wiring was shorted to ground, trace the control circuit wire from the relay block to the Engine ECU. Cut out the damaged section of the wire, solder in a new section of equivalent gauge, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing. Re-loom the harness to prevent future chafing.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use a diagnostic service tool (like WinEEM4 or AGCO EDT) to clear the E521003.04 / SPN 521003 fault code.

  6. Test Operation

    Run the tractor and monitor the DEF system to ensure the heater circuit operates without triggering a derate or check engine light.
