Issue description
The system has detected an implausible signal or a stability timeout from the downstream NOx sensor (located at the top of the exhaust/tailpipe, after the SCR catalyst). This means the sensor is either failing to provide a stable reading of the nitrogen oxide levels, or the reading is not reflecting the expected emissions reduction, indicating a sensor failure or an issue with the SCR system's conversion efficiency.

Check the cause
Live Data Comparison: Use a diagnostic tool to monitor both the upstream and downstream NOx sensors. If the downstream NOx reading is flat or implausible while the upstream sensor responds normally to engine load changes, the downstream sensor is likely the culprit rather than the SCR catalyst.
Wiring & Connections: Inspect the wiring harness and the connector to the downstream NOx sensor for physical damage, melted wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Exhaust Leaks: Check for any exhaust leaks between the engine and the downstream NOx sensor, as introducing outside air can skew the sensor's readings.
DEF/AdBlue Quality: Ensure the DEF fluid is uncontaminated and the DEF injector is dosing properly. Poor DEF quality can cause poor NOx conversion, which the sensor will flag as an implausible reading.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, disconnect the battery, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the downstream NOx sensor, which is mounted at the top of the exhaust stack/tailpipe (after the DOC/DPF and SCR catalyst).
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector for the NOx sensor. Carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe. Note: Do not use an impact wrench to remove or install the sensor, as this can damage the threads or the sensitive ceramic element inside.
Cleaning
Clean the exhaust pipe mounting threads and ensure there are no carbon deposits blocking the port.
Installation
Thread the new NOx sensor into the exhaust pipe by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque. Warning: Do not touch the ceramic probe of the new sensor with bare fingers, as oil contamination will cause premature failure.
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, connect a diagnostic tool, clear the E521004.12 fault code, and run the tractor through a stationary regeneration or test drive to verify the repair.
