Issue description

The time required for the upstream NOx sensor (located before the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) to heat up, stabilize, and provide a plausible reading to the system has elapsed.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the upstream NOx sensor for chafing, melting, or open/short circuits. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion or moisture intrusion.

  2. Inspect the exhaust piping upstream of the DOC for leaks. An exhaust leak can introduce unmetered oxygen or cause temperature fluctuations, preventing the sensor from stabilizing.

  3. Look for related ECU codes that might indicate a total sensor failure or power supply issue, such as 521005.11 (Upstream NOx sensor missing) or 521005.2 (Upstream NOx sensor value implausible).

  4. Verify with an AGCO diagnostic tool (WinEEM4s / EDT) if there is an ECU software update available, as stability time parameters are sometimes adjusted by the manufacturer via software flashes.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Turn off the tractor and allow the exhaust system to cool completely. NOx sensors operate at extreme heat and pose a severe burn risk.

  2. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent short circuits or damage to the ECU during replacement.

  3. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the upstream NOx sensor. It is threaded into the exhaust pipe before the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC).

  4. Disconnect the Module

    Unplug the sensor's electrical connector from the main engine harness. (Note: NOx sensors consist of a probe and a control module box; they are replaced as a single integrated unit).

  5. Remove the Sensor

    Use a specialized NOx sensor socket or a 22mm wrench to carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe. If seized, apply penetrating oil to the threads and allow it to soak.

  6. Clean the Port

    Clean the threads in the exhaust pipe bung to ensure the new sensor seats correctly.

  7. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new genuine AGCO NOx sensor into the exhaust pipe. Note: Do not apply anti-seize compound to the sensor tip, as this will contaminate the element. If the threads are not pre-coated, apply a very small amount of high-temp anti-seize only to the threads.

  8. Torque and Route

    Tighten the sensor to the manufacturer's specified torque. Reconnect the electrical module and ensure the wiring is routed away from direct contact with the hot exhaust pipe.

  9. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Connect an AGCO diagnostic tool to clear the 521005.12 fault code from the ECU.

  10. Validation

    Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature (or perform a forced stationary regeneration) to verify the new sensor stabilizes and the code does not return.
