Massey Ferguson E521010.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): The DEF Tank Heater Solenoid Valve High Voltage
Issue description
The system has detected a short circuit to a high source (+12 V) on the return line of the AdBlue/DEF heating system, indicating a wiring short to power or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the ECU/SCR module to the DEF tank heater coolant valve solenoid for rub points, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to a +12V power source.
Disconnect the DEF tank heater solenoid valve and check the connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins.
With the key ON (engine off), use a multimeter to check the voltage at the solenoid connector. Test the signal wire for a short to battery voltage (+12V).
Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the DEF tank heater solenoid valve itself. If the resistance is out of specification or shows a dead short, the solenoid coil has failed internally.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent accidental electrical spikes.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wire, apply heat-shrink tubing, and re-loom the harness away from hot edges or vibration points.
Replace the Solenoid Valve
If the solenoid valve is internally shorted: Locate the DEF tank heater coolant valve, clamp off the coolant lines on either side, disconnect the electrical connector and hoses, install the new valve, and reconnect.
Reassemble and Purge
Unclamp the coolant lines and top off the engine coolant if any was lost during the swap.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the E521010.03 fault code, run the engine, and verify the code does not return.
