Massey Ferguson E521010.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): The DEF Tank Heater Solenoid Valve High Amps

The control module has detected an abnormally high electrical current (amperage) draw on the circuit responsible for operating the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) tank heater solenoid valve, typically pointing to a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid valve coil itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading from the Engine ECU to the DEF tank heater solenoid valve for chafed, melted, or exposed wires shorting to ground.

   Disconnect the pigtail at the DEF tank heater solenoid valve and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or melted pins.

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the DEF tank heater solenoid valve coil. Near zero resistance indicates an internal short.

   If the valve tests within specification, check the harness for a short to ground by testing continuity between the power supply wire at the valve connector and a known good chassis ground while the ECU is disconnected.

   Preparation

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts or ECU damage.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the DEF tank heater solenoid valve, which is typically plumbed into the engine coolant lines routing to the DEF tank heating element.

   Disconnect Electrical

   Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid valve.

   Clamp Coolant Lines

   Clamp off the coolant hoses on both sides of the valve to minimize coolant loss. Have a drain pan ready to catch any residual coolant.

   Remove the Valve

   Loosen the hose clamps, detach the coolant lines from the valve, and remove the mounting bolts securing the valve bracket to the chassis.

   Install New Valve

   Mount the replacement DEF tank heater solenoid valve. Reattach the coolant hoses and tighten the hose clamps securely.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new valve. Remove the hose clamps.

   Final Steps

   Reconnect the battery. Top off the engine coolant if any was lost. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool, start the tractor, and verify that the E521010.04 code does not return and there are no coolant leaks.
