Massey Ferguson 5372.16 – ECU: Turbo Waste Gate Over Heating Issue
Issue description
The system detects that the electronic turbocharger wastegate actuator is exceeding its safe operating temperature. This condition is typically caused by mechanical binding of the wastegate valve or excessive exhaust gas temperatures (EGT).

Check the cause
Check for concurrent ECU codes such as 005451.04, 005451.14, 005451.31 (Turbo Waste Gate Actuator Issues), or communication codes like 005370.19
Perform a mechanical linkage test: Allow the engine to cool, disconnect the actuator rod from the turbocharger wastegate arm, and manually move the wastegate arm back and forth to ensure it moves freely without binding
Visually inspect the electronic actuator housing and the wiring harness connector for signs of melting, scorching, or wire chafing
If the linkage moves freely, test the actuator motor as the electronic actuator itself has likely failed internally due to heat cycling
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Remove Linkage
Remove the retaining clip (c-clip or e-clip) securing the electronic actuator rod to the turbocharger wastegate lever.
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the electrical harness connector from the wastegate actuator.
Remove Actuator
Remove the mounting bolts securing the actuator bracket to the turbocharger compressor housing and remove the actuator assembly.
Install New Actuator
Bolt the replacement actuator into place on the turbocharger bracket.
Reconnect Linkage
Attach the actuator rod to the wastegate lever and secure it with a new retaining clip.
Reconnect Wiring
Plug the electrical harness back into the actuator.
Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Perform a wastegate actuator calibration/pre-load adjustment using an AGCO/Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool (EDT) to teach the ECU the new actuator's open and closed end-stops.
Clear Codes
Clear the 005372.16 fault code from the ECU and test-run the tractor under load to verify the repair.
Parts you might need
(3)Turbo Wastegate Actuator (Electronic)
If available separately for your specific engine model.
Complete Turbocharger Assembly
If the actuator cannot be sourced individually, the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced.
Wastegate Actuator Retaining Clip
Always replace the linkage clip to prevent the rod from vibrating loose during operation.
