Massey Ferguson 6.0.E2 – Hitch / PTO Control Module: Issue With PTO Speed Too Fast In ECO (Hitch)
Issue description
Engine speed exceeds the maximum allowed threshold (1,780 RPM) while the PTO is engaged in an 'Economy' mode (540E or 1000E), causing the PTO shaft to overspeed.

Check the cause
Verify Operator Habits: Confirm with the operator that they are not throttling the engine past 1,780 RPM while the PTO selector is in the 540E or 1000E position.
Live Data Monitoring: Connect a diagnostic tool (like AGCO EDT) to monitor live data for both Engine RPM and PTO RPM.
Sensor Signal Check: Look for erratic spikes in the PTO speed sensor reading that could falsely trigger the overspeed protection.
Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the PTO speed sensor for corrosion, chafing, or a short circuit.
Repair steps
Operator Education
Instruct the operator to keep engine RPM below the 1,780 RPM threshold when utilizing ECO PTO modes. If higher engine RPM is required for the task, they must switch the PTO selector to the standard 540 or 1000 mode.
Clear the Code
If the issue was operator-induced, simply clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool or by cycling the key and operating the tractor within normal parameters.
Sensor Replacement
If the sensor is faulty, locate the PTO speed sensor on the rear transmission housing, disconnect the electrical harness, unthread the faulty sensor, and install the new sensor. Ensure the sensor gap relative to the internal tone ring is correct if it is an adjustable depth sensor.
Final Verification
Run the tractor, engage the ECO PTO, and slowly increase engine RPM to 1,600 to verify the PTO operates smoothly without triggering the code.
