Massey Ferguson 6.00.4B – HITCH: Issue With PTO Slipping (Hitch)

The control module is detecting a mismatch between the engine speed and the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) output shaft speed. If the PTO speed sensor reads a lower-than-expected value while under load, the system determines that the internal hydraulic wet clutch pack is slipping.

   Check transmission/hydraulic fluid level and condition for burnt smell or heavily clogged filters causing low pressure

   Inspect the PTO speed sensor (on rear PTO housing) and wiring harness for failure or metallic debris causing false low RPM readings

   Perform a hydraulic pressure test at the PTO clutch test port to verify specified operating pressure (rules out faulty solenoid or internal leak)

   Perform a load test by engaging the PTO with an implement attached to verify mechanical slippage

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, disconnect the battery, and drain the transmission/hydraulic fluid.

   Remove Rear Components

   Disconnect the PTO speed sensor wiring, hydraulic lines to the PTO valve, and remove the rear PTO shield/cover.

   Extract the PTO Assembly

   Unbolt the rear PTO housing/carrier assembly from the rear axle center housing and carefully slide it out. The PTO clutch pack is usually housed within this assembly.

   Disassemble the Clutch Pack

   Remove the snap rings/circlips retaining the clutch pack. Pull out the alternating steel plates and friction discs.

   Inspect and Replace

   Inspect the clutch drum and piston for scoring. Replace all friction discs, steel separator plates, piston seals, and return springs using a complete PTO clutch kit.

   Reassembly

   Lubricate the new friction discs in clean hydraulic fluid before installation. Reassemble the clutch pack, ensuring the correct clearance/stack height is achieved.

   Reinstall

   Slide the PTO assembly back into the tractor housing and torque all bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the speed sensor and hydraulic lines.

   Refill and Test

   Replace the hydraulic filters, refill the transmission with the OEM-specified hydraulic fluid, clear the 6.00.4B fault code using a diagnostic scan tool, and test the PTO under load to verify the repair.
