Massey Ferguson 6.00.4D – HITCH: Issue With PTO Stub Shaft 540/1000 (HITCH)

Issue description

The tractor utilizes a sensor/switch located in the rear PTO housing to detect which shaft is installed and whether it is fully seated. This code is triggered when the sensor detects an invalid state. Common causes include the PTO stub shaft not being fully seated or bolted in properly, a mismatch between the physical shaft installed and the speed selected on the cab switch, a failed stub shaft position/speed sensor, or an open, short, or corrosion in the sensor's wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the PTO stub shaft is fully inserted, seated, and bolted correctly without excessive end-play.

  2. Ensure the correct shaft (e.g., 6-spline for 540 RPM or 21-spline for 1000 RPM) is installed and matches the cab selector switch.

  3. Inspect the PTO stub shaft position/speed sensor wiring harness and connector for dirt, moisture, corrosion, or broken wires.

  4. Check the sensor for proper air gap, ensure the magnetic tip isn't covered in metallic debris, and test for continuity or proper resistance.

  5. Clear the DTCs using a diagnostic tool to see if the code returns upon PTO engagement.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Remove the PTO Stub Shaft

    Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the PTO stub shaft in place. Pull the shaft out. Inspect the inner end of the shaft for excessive wear that might prevent it from triggering the internal sensor.

  3. Access the Sensor

    Locate the PTO stub shaft sensor on the rear PTO housing. It is usually secured with a bolt or threaded directly into the housing.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector. Unbolt or unscrew the sensor from the housing. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission/hydraulic fluid may leak.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean hydraulic oil. Insert it into the housing and tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten plastic-bodied sensors).

  6. Reinstall the Stub Shaft

    Clean the splines, insert the stub shaft, and secure it with its retaining hardware.

  7. Reconnect and Test

    Reconnect the sensor wiring and the battery. Start the tractor, engage the PTO, and verify that the cab display shows the correct PTO speed without throwing the 6.00.4D code.
