Massey Ferguson 6.01.04 – HITCH Controller (EHR) or TRANS1: Issue With PTO Solenoid Circuit (Hitch) / Issue With Rear PTO On/Off Solenoid Power Supply

The controller has detected an electrical anomaly—such as an open circuit, a short to ground, or abnormal resistance—in the circuit that supplies power to the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) engagement solenoid valve. Because the system cannot verify the electrical integrity of the solenoid, it disables the PTO to prevent mechanical damage or unintended engagement.

   Check fuses related to the PTO and Hitch controllers, located in the main cab fuse panel or directly below the PTO lever

   Inspect the external multi-pin wiring harness plug that routes through the cab floor for clean pins, solid contact, and lack of corrosion

   Perform a resistance test on the solenoid coil using a multimeter across the two pins to ensure it isn't internally shorted or open

   Perform a direct power test by briefly applying 12 volts directly to the solenoid terminals to listen for a distinct 'click' indicating valve movement

   Prep the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the PTO solenoid valve, which is typically mounted on the top of the rear hitch area or rear axle housing.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid. (Note: Older OEM coils had a pigtail wire with a connector at the end; newer updated OEM replacements have the connector integrated directly into the coil body).

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the valve base to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.

   Remove the Solenoid

   Remove the retaining screws or bolts holding the solenoid valve in place and pull the valve out.

   Install the New Part

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic fluid. Insert the new valve and tighten the retaining screws to the manufacturer's specified torque.

   Reconnect and Test

   Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Start the tractor and cycle the PTO switch to clear the safety lockout. Verify that the PTO engages properly and the fault code clears.
