Massey Ferguson 6.01.06 – Hitch Controller (HITCH) or Transmission Controller (TRANS1): Issue With PTO Solenoid Circuit

The control module has detected an electrical irregularity in the circuit responsible for powering the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) engagement solenoid. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or a failed solenoid coil. When this code is active, the PTO may fail to engage, hesitate, or fail to disengage properly.

   Inspect the wiring harness from the PTO solenoid back to the controller for obvious rub points, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

   Disconnect the PTO solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or loose connections.

   Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil to determine if it is completely open (infinite resistance) or shorted (zero resistance).

   Ensure the circuit has a clean, solid ground.

   Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition, as dirty or low fluid can cause the mechanical side of the valve to stick, potentially overheating the coil.

   Safety First

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Relieve Pressure

   Relieve all hydraulic system pressure before opening the circuit.

   Locate the Solenoid

   The PTO solenoid valve typically mounts directly to the transmission housing where the hydraulic lines connect to the PTO clutch pack system.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical harness plug from the solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts/hardware and carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the transmission housing.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the mounting port on the transmission housing to ensure no dirt or debris enters the hydraulic system during installation.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-rings/seals on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic fluid. Insert the new valve into the housing and tighten the mounting bolts to the OEM torque specification.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

   Testing

   Top up the hydraulic fluid if any was lost. Start the tractor and test the PTO engagement from the cab to ensure smooth operation and verify the fault code has cleared.
